Sopas Nursing School to Re open

The once iconic Sopas Adventist Hospital

Yes, You have heard it!  Sopas Nursing school is going to re open in the New Year with 40 students. Well done Governer Ipatas. It is well overdue.

Sopas is some 20 minutes’ drive from Wabag town. The Sopas Nursing College is situated on steep mountains. It has produced some of the province’s and country’s best health officers.
Some 2 years ago, a tribal fight had erupted between warring tribes residing around the college premises. Several people lost their lives and others were left in critical condition. All of the staff and students fled the college. This finally prompted the closure of the college.

The Nursing College has re-opened its doors and is looking at bringing quality health care to the people in the highlands region, and other parts of the country as well.

The college will be taking in the first 40 nurses, all females, next year.

Governor Peter Ipatas said the college will train the women and then post them throughout the highlands region and other parts of the country.

Mr. Ipatas said the college will also take in patients; this will provide hands on experience for the students.

Just recently, the provincial government allocated some funds to renovate and extend the college. Contractors are currently hard at work, getting vital infrastructure like the administration building and dormitories up as soon as possible.

The college has also received new medical equipment in preparation for classes to commence next year. It has a laboratory, maternity ward, surgical ward and others including the in-patient section. It has already taken in patients for treatment.

`The facility has been maintained and is ready for the intakes to utilize.

The governor said the college has been given a second chance, given the fact that it has produced so many health specialists currently serving in the province and country as well.

He said the college will also be of great benefit to the people of Wabag and the Enga Province.
